Paddys Valley

A quick overview of what happened last week. I apologise for any details I leave out but a week of really shitty sleep and a very busy week doesn’t help my memory.

Sunday: Flight over on Sunday, Got no sleep while the mulley man who was sitting beside me kept teasing me about it in between naps. However I was unusally alive after the flight which I am still paying for now.

We regrouped at the airport and after figuring out how we’d get there and how to pack suitcases in rented cars we arrived in the Cardinal Hotel (Kudos to Shane for managing to fit myself and Hélène into the back of car). I think we just relaxed for a while and then met up later for pizza and then I’m pretty sure we went out for a few beers. Seeing a good few people get carded was a good laugh. Especially when Damien laughed at someone for being carded and then was carded moments later.

Monday: We did little that morning but scope out places to have a decent breakfast. We met up with Robert Scoble and Loic Le Meur that evening in a bar in San Francisco

Tuesday: Tuesday was a very interesting day indeed. We met up with Facebook at 9am in the morning where we met Mike Murphy (VP of Media Sales) and Dave Morin (Head of Platform) and then we met up with Ross Mayfield of SocialText who gave us such valuable insight into running a startup.

We then went to the Enterprise Ireland event that evening where a select few got to pitch to a panel of VC’s

Wednesday: We headed off to Microsoft in the morning where we met Scott of the MTC who showed us how nicely Exchange 2007 integrates with other software they’ve developed to build this kickass unified communication system. I can’t find words to describe it, you should look at unified communications on the Microsoft website to see how nifty it is. We also got vouchers to use at the Microsoft employee store which is dirt cheap.

Some of us went to Google for a tour of the campus and lunch. I went along happily while carrying my Microsoft bag. All I’ll say about Google lunch time is that its like some sort of organised chaos. Everyone forms queues around different buffet tables which no obvious signs anywhere, wandering around like an idiot I eventually managed to find some food I liked.

We headed off to Ning where Diego told us all about Ning and about it and after a while Marc Andreessen showed up and had a little Q&A session. Very impressive.

Thursday: We met Seth from Meebo that morning who gave us a talk about Meebo and getting funding and from what he told us shows how much he is on top of his game. Its an inspiration to see someone with such motivation and drive (This applies to everyone we met but if I kept repeating that, this wouldn’t be a particularly interesting blog post)

We went off to Yahoo! Brickhouse then where we met with Salim and the folk at Yahoo Brickhouse and we got told about their upcoming products which sound quite nifty alright. We were looked after well by the Yahoo gang, there was beer and pizza provided for us.

We then headed off to another bar for the Irish in San Francisco event which was interesting and then caught the last Caltrain home.

Friday: We met the law firm WSGR who told us all about them and what they could do for us if we decided to set up in the US and what they are offering is very nice for the top tech legal firm in the valley. They are also sending us out their course material for their entrepreneur course which is quite nice of them.

We hooked up with Salim again (after having a semi difficult time to find Yahoo by car, merci to the bench’d gang for being the drivers this time) and he gave us a quick tour of Yahoo’s campus and we met with their head of M&A and people gave a little pitch to him.

We met up again with Salim and Nathan (former tech advisor to the Canadian government) at a pub that evening in Palo Alto and spent the evening there.

Saturday: We did very little that day and took the morning off and headed into San Francisco via the Caltrain where I bought a very comfortable and stylish jacket from The North Face. We wandered around for a bit and then all met up for some food in the Empress of China and then headed back to Palo Alto on the Caltrain and we decided a week long of long days was taking our toll and we headed off to bed… then disaster struck.

While checking emails and watching some crappy US tv there was a burning smell in the air and moments later the power died. I decided to get up and take a look and it turns out the transformer had burst into flames and knocked out power in the surrounding area. We hung about for an hour or two to see cops show up and close off the street and firemen trying to reverse a pump into the alley

Sunday: A lazy day where we got some breakfast and packed our bags and got a taxi to the airport where they are at THREAT LEVEL ORANGE. To be honest I was expecting some hassle from the TSA for having a laptop and various other bits and pieces but just got waved through. Despite taking 4 Tylenol PM I only managed to get an hour of sleep during the flight.

When I eventually got home I fell asleep on the couch and woke up at 4pm. I wish I stayed awake.

I know this post has probably missed out on something and full of grammar holes but its too late in the evening to care.

Paddys Valley

I have a long write up which I’m working on.

It was such a fun and busy week all my days have blended together and trying to figure out what happened when it proving trickier then I thought. It will be here soon.

I promise.

Jobhunting…

Since I’m not really big into editing published posts for fear of messing up RSS feeds and such.

I thought I’d make a quick post to let you know that large multi-national corporation who I was interviewing with, I passed their european hiring committee only to be rejected by the US hiring committee for “lack of commercial experience”. Wank.

Now I have to start sending CV’s off again. I hate sending CV’s.

PaddysValley

It is currently 2:30 am and i’m in that zone of being alert from large intakes of caffeine and tired after an long flight across 8 time zones. I knew I was too alert on the way over and I’d suffer on the way back.

How would I describe PaddysValley? In a few short words: Totally motherfucking freakin awesome. I had never met a billionaire before in my life, I met two (that I know of) during the trip.

I’m planning on writing up a decent post later on but I’m gonna try readjust myself to GMT. In the mean time there are some photos you can look at.

My very limited flickr set. (I was using a camera phone with no memory)

Marcus’s photos.

So… whats new?

On the 2nd of December I will be in Dublin Airport with the rest of the PaddyValley folk waiting for our flights. In a typical move from me, I have put off ordering business cards until and now I’m hoping VistaPrint will have them here in time.

I’ve been doing interviews with a large multinational company who do search and advertising mainly, I did an on-site interview last week and I was told it was normally a week when they get back to you, so I’m a little bit apprehensive every time I check my email or my phone rings.

On Monday, I go off and do my weeks e-learning for my CCNA course. Hello to anyone who might be doing the same.

Although this bash quote has been pointed to me:

<spazdor> how do you get a Cisco Certified Network Administrator off your porch?
<cnug> …?
<spazdor> pay for your pizza

When I’ll update this next…? Who knows.

ComReg still have no cajones

I’ve just read this on Pat’s blog:

In a shocking typical move from ComReg they have bent over to the will of Vodafone and allowed them a 400% increase in the cost of dialing 1850 numbers. I don’t know but it looks like they are trying to completely fuck telecoms in Ireland up. As if they hadn’t done enough damage regarding broadband.

If anyone from ComReg is reading this, I’m currently in need of a job so if a commissioner spot opens up call me, I know allowing a telco to hike up costs 400% is a bad thing so it seems I’m more qualified then the current morons you have running the place.

Also, I had hoped when the Greens got control of Comms in government that things would change for the better but it appears they are just as spineless and pathetic as ComReg. But thats for another post.

No I’m not dead…

I wonder how many times I’ll end up using that title in the lifetime of this blog. Quite a few times I suspect.

In the mean time I’ve been sorting out the legalities of being a company director. All these laws you’ve never heard of are highlighted to you in that booklet they send out. I suspect I’m most of the way there now.

Sorting out bank accounts too, now that is a right pain in the hole. There is quite a bit of paperwork behind it and I never realised how expensive a merchant account can be. I’d want to be making a hell of a lot more to justify switching over from our current solution.

I also got myself a part time job with my school being the tech guy from their adult ed class. While I remain on the search for something full time, I’m currently doing interviews with a large multinational company who mainly do search and advertising but do other stuff like email too. To anyone familiar with the process, i’m currently waiting to hear back from the first tech interview.

Oddly enough I’ve applied to a few other companies and never heard anything back. This large multinational was the company I was least expecting to hear from. It’s funny how these things work.

Oh yeah and I went off and joined the Army Reserve too. Probably won’t mention that again, opsec and all that you know.

I should also probably consider finishing off these draft posts. Hell one of them is “Joost invites anyone?”

I think I’m a little behind…

Halo 3: Finish the fight

Hmm, I don’t know how weird this is but:

This time last night I was coming home from Halo 3 launch party (was good although no RDA) and HMV with my copy. I have just finished single player now.

I’ve also hit exactly 2000 gamerpoints finishing Halo.

I don’t have much at the moment, but I was a little underwhelmed by the ending of the game. Does anyone see it pretty much as Halo 1 with slightly prettier graphics and more peril? The ending was a straight rip off though, a long drive to the exit while being surrounded by impossible jumps and explosions.

While I haven’t been counting I did feel Halo 3 was a lot shorter then the other two games and its not like I’ve been playing straight through since last night, an hour or two every once in a while and I’m already done.

Sure you could say I haven’t unlocked it on every level and so on on on, but thats not me, generally when I play through a game I only want to do it once. I don’t feel the need to stroke my e-penis by having a game entirely completed.

Yeah yeah I know its all about multiplayer, I don’t ever want to know the total amount of hours (years?) people have played Halo 2 but I’m not one for sticking to multiplayer for any length of time. Hmm I don’t know. It’s a good game but does it deserve all the hype? I just don’t know.

Pulp Fiction

Jason sent me a link to this a few days ago and I have to say I am so blown away by how cool this clip is. It is Pulp Fiction in Typography and my god, it’s so damn awesome.

I’m also working on draft post about DemoBar/PaddysValley/OpenCoffee too. Needless to say, it was awesome.

Back to Vodafone

Originally I got my mobile from Vodafone, but unhappy with their policy on credit expiring after 30 days (I always lost lots of credit that way) I switched over to O2. After they fumbled the switchover I should of seen the signs. Although I did manage to get the best part of 120 euros worth of free credit from them because of it

Over the last few days, I’ve become fed up since I’ve started using my phone more and more. Sitting down remaining still talk to someone, only for the call to disconnect. People on Vodafone would tell me when they dial me, they hear out of service and so on. I wouldn’t receive calls at all at times. So adios O2. I’ve switched back to Vodafone (Also take a hint O2, their sim switchover pack is free.)
