Came back from France and going back again Wednesday. I seriously doubt many other people are here two months already filling out travel expenses forms. Yes! Note the plural!
I am working now for two months!
Also the twitter tool on the sidebar is not updating. I should really fix that. And speaking of blog related things, I tried move over to MovableType but while trying to test it out I had endless problems with the cgi part of it. So I’m sticking with Wordpress for the time being. However I am fed up with updating it so I will move to some other platform but I just haven’t decided which one yet.
I can’t stop listening to this, it is just so awesome.
I should point out everything on this blog is my own opinion and is not representative of Goa Game Services Ltd, France Telecom or the Orange Group so don’t bother to contact my employers if you don’t like whats here.
So I’ve been here at work for a week now and what can I say, its pretty awesome. Since the team I’m on is pretty new (2 weeks old) we are getting to build our own systems and trial out what is most suitable for what we have to do. Needless to say I won’t be saying much more about what I’m doing, company secrets and all that. But if I do come across anything that is newsworthy and not secret I might post it up here. Might…
Since I’m not really big into editing published posts for fear of messing up RSS feeds and such.
I thought I’d make a quick post to let you know that large multi-national corporation who I was interviewing with, I passed their european hiring committee only to be rejected by the US hiring committee for “lack of commercial experience”. Wank.
Now I have to start sending CV’s off again. I hate sending CV’s.
On the off chance that anyone in a tech company reads this blog, would they be interested in hiring me? My previous employer I never heard back from and I just got an email this morning back from Microsoft saying they’ll only do one year internships for college students (or that they’ll admit, i’m sure if you knew someone they could sort you out)
Some caveat’s though (not that I want to sound ungrateful or anything)
1) I’ve already done the whole summer doing tech support thing. I’d like to get experience in other things too
2) Since I’m reliant on public transport I’m not as mobile as I’d like. I know for a fact I can get to either to the City Center or Citywest with ease.
Edit:
3) Forgot the most important one, it would be a fairly short term since I (depending on grades of course :P) hopefully would have college starting in September
As some of you may or may not know, I’m involved in EcwHost a very small web hosting company and disaster struck!
We have a server in the US in The Planet which until now were a very decent DC and when the chips were down, in became the biggest pain in the ass to fix. Needless to say myself and Nick were talking about a new server as our old one was getting a bit sluggish to find one morning our current one wouldn’t boot. Oh dear, submitting a ticket to them it was several days and phone call later before we got this resolved. Even then our server was still down, I had managed to convince them to boot Knoppix and turn on SSH so we could move our files.
Now compare this to SoftLayer who after talking to Amanda in sales had my server deployed and ready for my use in 3 or 4 hours and even threw in a free CPU upgrade! (Everyone should do automated image building for servers, its so much faster) and then cPanel fun started.
Doing account transfers manually using cPanel is no easy task at all. For the last few days, I’ve been going to bed at 3 or 4am working on stuff and getting up at 8am to go to school and then come back and do some more work. But this morning I was able to get up at 11am and it was wonderful considering I got most of the issues sorted the night before. Of course there is a few small things to resolve first but otherwise life is good.
Today I finished up my job for the second summer in a row. According to the job offer letter I got from where I was working, I started on the 12th of June and finished today on the 25th of August. It doesn’t feel like the summer has gone by but it has and on thursday I head back to the suck. Or also known as school where I enter as a 6th year student. I’m a little depressed about having to go back to school so this is all I’m bothered to write.
Yesterday I ordered a VPS from XenPlanet which arrived at 10:29am this morning. Unfournatly in the interests of security I choose a random password and forgot what it was, a quick email was sent and a few hours later I had the password on the server reset. At the moment I’m not sure what I’m going to exactly do with it. DNS Services for some sites alright and for connecting to in work to get around the pesky filters.
Of course I could always go down to the test lab and plug directly into the net there but that might look a bit odd until those servers arrive. More about those later when they are setup. Even then telling you exactly about them would reveal the company I’m working for which I don’t want to advertise, because I don’t want to be pestered like my boss.
And its a bit of a slow day. Since my boss has taken time off since the birth of his daughter (Congrats on that) and some of the work I’m doing I have to rely on other people I’m kind of left working out the fine points of what I’m doing.
Hopefully the Networks team will have something for me in the next week or two, I should be responsible for a launch of something community based in the near future assuming all goes well.
Lunch time is interesting to say the least since the usual group is splitting up. 2 people have moved on, my boss is off work for the next while, another is off doing a huge amount of travel for the company so he’s jetting around most of the time. So my lunch time is mainly in female company and currently weddings, babies, shoes, clothes are currently stuck in my head. So off to lunch I go.
