So ten things…

For anyone who remembers I posted about one year ago ten things I’d like to have done by now. I shall now publish the results of this, slightly late of course.

(1) Get full drivers license (Doing driving lessons now) Passed!

(2) Be well on the way to getting my PPL (Private Pilots License) Failed!

(3) Get my CCNA (Its not something you can read a few pages every night) Passed!

(4) Get into somewhere decent for College Failed!

(5) Start my own business (Idea is there but I doubt customers are) Passed! (technically it was a different business I started but a business)

(6) Project Tower. If you have to ask then don’t. Failed!

(7) Project Tower Mk II. See six Failed!

(8) Be more of an active blogger (Also includes the finishing of the draft posts sitting here) Failed! (Those drafts are still incomplete)

(9) Work for either Microsoft or Google (or both!) Failed! (Well I nearly passed, I got rejected by Google at the last stage of the hiring process. I will apply again in a year or so though when I get more commercial experience)

(10) Learn a programming language Failed!

So yeah… not an entirely sucessful year then. Oh well maybe I’ll repost this a year later and see if much has changed.

Back to Vodafone

Originally I got my mobile from Vodafone, but unhappy with their policy on credit expiring after 30 days (I always lost lots of credit that way) I switched over to O2. After they fumbled the switchover I should of seen the signs. Although I did manage to get the best part of 120 euros worth of free credit from them because of it

Over the last few days, I’ve become fed up since I’ve started using my phone more and more. Sitting down remaining still talk to someone, only for the call to disconnect. People on Vodafone would tell me when they dial me, they hear out of service and so on. I wouldn’t receive calls at all at times. So adios O2. I’ve switched back to Vodafone (Also take a hint O2, their sim switchover pack is free.)

SAGE-IE September Talk

Yesterday I stepped inside Google’s EU headquarters for a SAGE-IE meeting that David Malone was giving on “Possible Questions to ask when Interviewing Sysadmins”

A very good talk considering I’m now at the stage where I’m going to be sending out CV’s for applying for jobs in the whole networking/sysadmin area. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could answer some of the questions in a decent level of detail (considering my experience) while I could give partial answers (Who knew if UDP was being filtered you can send an ICMP unreachable response back, always believed it was a fire and forget protocol, which it is to an extent) to others.

The only one I found myself stumped at was printing in linux/unix because I’ve never used linux/unix before on the desktop long enough to actually set up printing. At the moment this is my current mindset

Servers = Linux/Unix

Desktops = Windows

Before I anger someone, this is my personal view and each to their own.

A typically Irish moment

I don’t think I could describe the Irish any more accurately then this.

I was in town today dropping off forms to the CRO (who could really do with air conditioning in their office) and on my way back home I stopped off in McDonalds for a bite to eat (What can I say, I’m a classy guy)

The fire alarm went off while I was biting into my burger and so the guy sitting beside me and myself in perfect sync turned around to see if there was flames behind us. Satisfied we were in no immediate danger we turned back around and finished eating.

Guys and Dolls…

And this is not about that crappy musical.

Nick sent me a link to this

And all I can say that its freaked the shit out of me. These people obviously have some very deep rooted psychological problems that they should really get some help with. When you get to a stage in life where you refer to a over sized piece of plastic as ’she’ and feel stressed out from being separated from ‘her’ you know you’ve got some problems.

Conor does Scotland

I’m back from wee bonnie Scotland (Well I came back Monday, i’ve been lazy since)

Some of the highlights have been:

Cute girl on plane who I was talking to

….Then she told me I sound like I have some time managment issues.

Meeting Nick and Kirsty (My partner in business/crime (delete as necessary))

Spending the majority of time watching movies/playing games

Spending the night before I go home actually talking about the business and doing necessary paperwork. And all about Project Pontouf at some ungodly hour in the morning.

Going to bed when the sun was rising

Eating breakfast at 5pm

Shame about my finger cutting off the last bit of that photo.

I am not a lawyer….

But does Aer Lingus’s Conditions of Carriage (Now referred to as CoC) make very little sense? I’m currently going through them to see if there is any way of getting my money back, the fight on the customer service front isn’t going to plan at the moment but when the only way to contact them is by fax or post…. You are stuck dealing with reservation agents.

So I’m looking over everything and their fare rules say no refunds unless you are on a business class flight. Or as the rules say

NO REFUND AT ANY TIME EXCEPT FOR BUSINESS CLASS

However when you look at the Conditions of Carriage you see the following:

2.5 CONDITIONS PREVAIL OVER REGULATIONS

Except as provided in these Conditions of Carriage, in the event of inconsistency between these Conditions of Carriage and any other regulations we may have, dealing with particular subjects, these Conditions of Carriage shall prevail.

So when I’m reading that it looks like to me, if there is something in the fare rules which doesn’t agree with the conditions of carriage, the conditions of carriage win over, but they also say this:

3.1.3 Some Tickets are sold at fares which may be partially or completely non-refundable. You should check the fare rules at the time of booking and choose the fare best suited to your needs. You may also wish to ensure that you have appropriate insurance to cover instances where you might have to cancel your Ticket or are prevented from travelling.

But since I’ve just proven the fact the fare rules don’t seem to apply any more that statement is pretty much usless And section 4.2 goes:

If you do not travel, you may apply in writing for a full refund of taxes, fees and charges paid, in which case the refund may be subject to a reasonable administration charge.

So in theory if I wasn’t to travel on that flight I could claim a full refund (bar an admin charge for the refund itself) since under section 4.2 of their CoC it says if I don’t fly I get a refund.

But when you look at Article 10 - Refunds, it seems to be promising for me with one snag.

ARTICLE 10 - REFUNDS

10.1 We will refund a Ticket or any unused portion, in accordance with the applicable fare rules or Tariff, as follows:

10.1.1 Except as otherwise provided in this ARTICLE, we shall be entitled to make a refund either to the person named in the Ticket or, to the person who has paid for the Ticket, upon presentation of satisfactory proof of such payment

10.3 VOLUNTARY REFUNDS

10.3.1 If you are entitled to a refund of your Ticket for reasons other than those set out in 10.2, the amount of the refund shall be:

10.3.1.1 if no portion of the Ticket has been used, an amount equal to the fare and any taxes, fees and charges paid less any reasonable service charges or cancellation fees; The rules in 10.2 cover the following: “If we cancel a flight, fail to operate a flight reasonably according to schedule, fail to stop at your destination or Stopover, or cause you to miss a connecting flight

If you look at 10.1 it says “in accordance with the applicable fare rules” but section 2.5 seems to invalidate the fare rules, so I’m not sure where I stand with them on that part. However I think since I have proven their fare rules are not in line with their CoC so the fare rules don’t apply anymore so that section is null and void so I can get a full refund if I don’t fly with that ticket.

So this is my thinking, if I was to book another ticket with Aer Lingus at the lower rate and not fly using the higher priced ticket I can claim a full refund on it and get my money back. Would anyone with a more detailed knowledge of contract law care to look over my ideas?

Aer Lingus pricing ideas suck

I had to book my flights to San Fran to head off with the guys from PaddysValley in December so I booked my flights last night before I headed off to Scotland (Yes I’m  there now) checking up on my twitter feeds I saw Damien mention price today was around 500 euros.

I was gobsmacked. Last night they charged me 830 euros for the same flight. I went on to the Aer Lingus site and low and behold the total for the flight today is 485 euros. Flicking through their site it said you can change flights so I went and rebooked them at a different fare and they charged me 70 euros for the privilege. But of course when you read the fine print, oh if you get a lower fare we’ll hold on to your money. A big fuck you really.

How the hell does a price difference of 345 euros suddenly appear overnight. Needless to say I’m pissed at the moment.

Google writing cheques they can’t cash…

Heh heh.

I love it.

It is nice to know even giant companies like Google do on occasion make mistakes.

In need of employment

On the off chance that anyone in a tech company reads this blog, would they be interested in hiring me? My previous employer I never heard back from and I just got an email this morning back from Microsoft saying they’ll only do one year internships for college students (or that they’ll admit, i’m sure if you knew someone they could sort you out)

Some caveat’s though (not that I want to sound ungrateful or anything)

1) I’ve already done the whole summer doing tech support thing. I’d like to get experience in other things too

2) Since I’m reliant on public transport I’m not as mobile as I’d like. I know for a fact I can get to either to the City Center or Citywest with ease.

Edit:

3) Forgot the most important one, it would be a fairly short term since I (depending on grades of course :P) hopefully would have college starting in September
