Yes, VLC is the only way to go. I have some DVDs from different regions, but I don’t really want to have to change the settings on the drive and risk locking the drive. I think my DVD reader can only change zones 5 times. VLC all the way,
I had the same problem, there is another way around it. The program is called MPlayer, the player is based on the Windows Media Player just before Windows brought out the digital copy protection versions. Thats what I have been using and it is a great piece of software, some great options included in it.

Its hilarious to see all this effort in trying to prevent copying and you can just open it in another program instead.
