I’m on a roll

I feel I have a bit to get off my chest so I might as well keep going with this. My fancy oakleys arrived on Tuesday as well, its finally nice to have sunglasses which actually have proper lenses in them and thus allow you to see. I find the most appealing feature of them is the fact you can’t see my eyes through the lenses. Shame the weather in Dublin has been so fucking shit, I’ve gotten very little use out of them so far.

Something else which I never even thought of is the fact they wrap around my eyes and I don’t have blind spots anymore, I actually felt a little motion sick when I first putting them on since I can take on that bit more from my eyes. I’ve uploaded a photo albeit a poor one to flickr. My webcam is no match for someone else I know who takes photos all the time. Check out Phil’s site

New toys

On Tuesday, my (most) of my stuff from Amazon arrived (waiting on a book currently out of stock) which was a welcome surprise considering I only ordered on Sunday, and they accepted my credit card without any hassle, shock horror!

So I now have volume 4 and 5 of the collected short stories of Philip K Dick, and while I read them, I listen to the tunes of Rocco DeLuca & The Burden which are currently my new favourite band. So this is the first time I’ve bought an actual CD and not just got the songs online, I feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside now. And its possible the last CD I remember buying was the single Beautiful Day by U2.

Currently having a job and thus money, I’ve been buying a few things, I was contracted out to my uncle to set up a wireless network for him and deciding a WRT54G is the only way to go, I went in search of a online retailer. I ended up at my usual place of Komplett where I saw a WRT54G going for 17 euro! Quite possibly a pricing mistake so there was no time to loose, I thought I might need a decent wireless router so I got another one and some CAT5E cable as I need to run more wired sockets into my room. About 1000Ft of CAT5E or around 300m for anyone who can’t convert between units. I’ll probably never need that much, but its nice to know you always have some lying around. All I need now is a decent crimp tool.

Play.com suck

In an attempt to try get something to read/listen to over the summer I thought I’d go finally actually buy a CD and some books. After looking them up I saw they were available on amazon and play.com so being a cheapskate I decided free shipping from play.com won the day.

Bad idea really, after my card being rejected 3 times and even after calling them I’ve just cancelled my order and gone with amazon. The first two times were annoying but after calling them to say everythings ok and then to reject it again was the last straw.

So in short fuck you guys and your billing system. Amazon is getting my business now.

Expensive Tastes

After getting a letter saying I was due an eye exam, I decided to actually follow their advice and get an eye exam. So off to Vision Express I went intent on getting my eyes checked and nothing more. Now I’m about 900 quid down after this afternoon and this is my story.

Getting the letter I thought my eyes were the most important sense I had so I better keep them in good shape, being happy with my glasses as they are I went and had my eye checked to find there is a very very tiny change in my left eye which isn’t bad for two years of computer use.

I was eyeing (excuse the pun) up some new glasses as the frames were slightly out of shape on mine. Going through the price range I found something I liked at 350 quid. Ouch. Since it is summer and having glasses, stylish sunglasses aren’t the easiest thing to come across. Seeing oakley sunglasses now available to vision impared people like me I knew I had to get a pair. So I did, a very expensive pair at 550 euros. Since they are wrap around glasses and can’t be made up in the shop they’ve had to send off to oakley to have the lenses custom made, so in about 3 weeks I’ll have them. Am I mad? Quite possibly. Check out my flickr account to see a poor quality photo.

So here in work

And its a bit of a slow day. Since my boss has taken time off since the birth of his daughter (Congrats on that) and some of the work I’m doing I have to rely on other people I’m kind of left working out the fine points of what I’m doing.

Hopefully the Networks team will have something for me in the next week or two, I should be responsible for a launch of something community based in the near future assuming all goes well.

Lunch time is interesting to say the least since the usual group is splitting up. 2 people have moved on, my boss is off work for the next while, another is off doing a huge amount of travel for the company so he’s jetting around most of the time. So my lunch time is mainly in female company and currently weddings, babies, shoes, clothes are currently stuck in my head. So off to lunch I go.

Vista

So the public beta is finally out, and I’ve managed to snatch a copy of the 64 and 32 bit editions despite the overloaded servers. I haven’t got much time to play about with it since running it in VMWare is quite slow, I don’t know if its since I only assigned it 512Mb of ram or something else. Its very pretty on first glances I have to say, but from my albeit limited experience the whole security push seems to be improved but for us geeks I guess it will become annoying after a while.

Its quite similar to the Mac confirm thing they’ve got going on. Saying this is a restricted option do you want to continue etc etc. I also learned that it is a VERY BAD THING to assign all your physical memory to a VMWare machine and will cause your PC to crash. Since I start work tomorrow and need to format my laptop fairly quickly I won’t get time to play with Vista for the next few days so until then I’ll hold off on any more judgements

Its been too long

I know I said I’d be blogging over the next couple of days but what a bloody disaster that turned out to be.

As previously mentioned I said I’d be getting my old job back and after a few phone calls this week everything is confirmed. I start on Monday doing some research on methods and pricing here and abroad in certain things. What will happen to the research, if it remains internal or is published for all to see, I’m not sure yet. Although it looks like it could be something interesting to start off.

While some say the weather has been nice over the last few days, Its been too warm for me over the last few days and I’ve become very lazy, late nights and early mornings (go figure, I have no reason to be up)

So here’s to better times!
